How People Find a Church Today
Finding a Church in the “Internet Age”
Years ago, when someone needed to find a church to visit, they would just get in their car and drive around their neighborhood.
They would stop in on a few churches, eventually settling for the one they thought was the best of those that they visited.
Then a few years later, they started using the “Yellow pages” to find churches in their area.
However, in this “Post Internet” age, they are more than likely to find their next church using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo or Bing.
According to SearchEngineWatch.com, in 2006, an estimated 213 million people were using the Internet to search for something. You and I both know that number has grown dramatically since then.
It’s estimated that of those 213 million people, 1 out of 7 were searching for a new church home. Let’s do the math, that’s nearly 30 million people all searching for a church. This number breakdown works for all geographic areas, including yours.
Studies have also shown that of the millions of people searching online, 70% are younger adults, who have grown up using the Internet. This younger crowd searches for almost everything online, they are especially likely to search for a church home on the Internet. I have two kids, a 24 year old and a 18 year old, neither has ever used a Yellow Page, nor do they have any interest in doing so.
Unfortunately, if you are not online or more to the point, if your church does not have a web presence, then it is unlikely that these people are finding your church. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Starting a web presence is as easy as:
- Creating a website
- Creating a social media page
- Optimizing your website, so it can be found using the search engines
- Continually providing meaningful info on your church website
